حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْحَنْظَلِيُّ أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَی بْنُ آدَمَ حَدَّثَنَا الْفُضَيْلُ بْنُ مَرْزُوقٍ عَنْ شَقِيقِ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ عَنْ الْبَرَائِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ قَالَ نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ حَافِظُوا عَلَی الصَّلَوَاتِ وَصَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ فَقَرَأْنَاهَا مَا شَائَ اللَّهُ ثُمَّ نَسَخَهَا اللَّهُ فَنَزَلَتْ حَافِظُوا عَلَی الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَی فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ کَانَ جَالِسًا عِنْدَ شَقِيقٍ لَهُ هِيَ إِذَنْ صَلَاةُ الْعَصْرِ فَقَالَ الْبَرَائُ قَدْ أَخْبَرْتُکَ کَيْفَ نَزَلَتْ وَکَيْفَ نَسَخَهَا اللَّهُ وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ

اسحاق بن ابراہیم حنظلی، یحیی بن آدم، فضیل بن مرزوق، شقیق بن عقبہ، حضرت براء بن عازب رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ فرماتے ہیں کہ یہ آیت نازل ہوئی حَافِظُوا عَلَی الصَّلَوَاتِ وَصَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ تو ہم اس آیت کو جب تک اللہ نے چاہا اسی طرح پڑھتے رہے پھر اللہ تعالیٰ نے اسے منسوخ فرما دیا تو اس طرح آیت نازل ہوئی (حَافِظُوا عَلَی الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَی فَلَمَّا بَلَغْتُهَا آذَنْتُهَا فَأَمْلَتْ عَلَيَّ حَافِظُوا عَلَی الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَی وَصَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ،) تو ایک آدمی جو کہ حضرت شقیق کے پاس بیٹھا ہوا تھا کہ اب نماز عصر ہی یہی نماز ہے حضرت براء نے فرمایا کہ میں نے تجھے بتا دیا ہے کہ یہ آیت کیسے نازل ہوئی اور اللہ نے اسے کیسے منسوخ فرما دیا اور اللہ ہی بہتر جانتا ہے۔

Al-Bara' b. 'Azib reported: This verse was revealed (in this way): "Guard the prayers and the 'Asr prayer." We recited it (in this very way) so long as Allah desired. Allah, then, abrogated it and it was revealed: "Guard the prayers, and the middle prayer." A person who was sitting with Shaqiq (one of the narrators in the chain of transmitters) said: Now it implies the 'Asr prayer. Upon this al-Bara' said: I have already informed you how this (verse) was revealed and how Allah abrogated it, and Allah knows best. Imam Muslim said: Ashja'i narrated it from Sufyan al-Thauri, who narrated it from al-Aswad b. Qais, who narrated it from 'Uqba, who narrated it from al-Bara' b. 'Azib who said: We recited with the Prophet (may peace be upon him) (the above-mentioned verse like this, i. e. instead of Salat al- Wusta, Salat al-'Asr) for a certain period. as it has been mentioned (in the above-quoted hadith).
